Introduction Of DVB SH

There are various well established DVB Standards available to deliver the services. DVB SH is also one of them. Previously we have read about DVB H standard which is known as Mobile Tv.  It uses the Terrestrial Network for delivery of DVB services. It uses the UHF Band. DVB SH was approved in 2007 by DVB Organization.

DVB SH is the advanced version of DVB H. In this article we will cover What Is DVB H, Working Of DVB H.

What Is DVB SH

DVB SH stands for Digital Video Broadcasting Satellite To Handheld. This standard uses both the mechanisms for delivering of services from Satellite to Handheld directly as well as through Terrestrial Network. Where delivering services can be Video, Audio and Data. Handheld devices can be Mobiles and Personal Digital Assistance.

So DVB SH standard leverages both the mediums Satellite to handheld and Terrestrial Network. It is Hybrid of Satellite and Terrestrial Network.

Both mediums are used to cover large area for delivering services. Where maximum area is covered by satellite system and rest of the area covered by Terrestrial Network. DVB SH standard uses the frequencies below 3 GHz which can be near about 2.2 GHz.

The DVB SH System provide the flexibility to the Service providers for choosing the transmission bandwidth of 1.7 MHz, 5 MHz, 6 MHz and 7 MHz.

There are two architecture of DVB SH first one is  SH-A and second one is SH-B. In SH-A OFDM is used in Terrestrial network as well as in satellite link. While on the other hand in SH-B OFDM is used in Terrestrial Network and TDM is used in Satellite link.

Working Of DVB SH

As shown above in the figure Audio, Video and Data content is inserted in the headend. The output of the headend goes for the Broadcasting Distribution Network.

Now this broadcasting distribution network broadcast your content in three ways mentioned with dark arrow. First feed goes for Satellite Up-link. Then satellite directly deliver the content to Mobile device or Handheld Device. In this satellite transmission technique we can use TDM or OFDM. Where TDM is Time Division Multiplexing while OFDM is Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing. In Satellite Transmission Technique TDM gives better performance.

This satellite transmission method cover the, area of country which are available in foot print. Rest of the area which can not be covered by satellite is covering through Terrestrial Transmitter and Mobile Transmitter.

Thus the distribution network provides one feed to Terrestrial Transmitter from where this signal is re-transmitted to Mobiles or Handheld devices. This is done to cover more area. Here OFDM is used.

While on the other hand third feed from distribution network goes into the Mobile Transmitter to cover the rest area for delivery of services to handheld devices or mobiles. Here OFDM is used.

Conclusion Of DVB SH

DVB SH is advanced method of DVB H for delivering the DVB services. In this technique content is delivering by Terrestrial Transmitters as well as Satellite too. The DVB H uses the UHF Frequencies while DVB SH uses the S band below 3 GHz. For delivery of video services satellite transmission is very good technique.
